The rug in the front room has been there since you moved in. It's an 8 by 10 wool blend, the dog sleeps on one corner of it, and somewhere along the way the cream border turned the color of weak tea. Rolling it up, wrestling it into the back of the SUV, and driving it somewhere to sit for two weeks is the reason it has never been cleaned.
So we don't ask you to. Safe-Dry of Chapin cleans area rugs right where they lie, on your floor, in your house. No pickup, no warehouse, no claim ticket, and the rug goes back under the coffee table the same afternoon. Right now there's a $25 rug coupon, too.
Reading the rug before touching it
Every rug gets looked over before any cleaning, and this part takes longer than people expect. The technician checks the face fiber, the backing, and the age, and looks hard at the dyes. A quick test on a hidden corner tells us if any color wants to move. Worn spots, loose fringe, and old stains get pointed out to you right then, along with the price.
Fiber decides almost everything after that.
Wool takes cleaning well and forgives a lot. Nylon, polyester, and olefin are tough, though they hang on to oily soil more than you'd think. Cotton can shrink if it gets too wet. Jute and sisal are the touchy ones, since water can turn them brown, so they get barely any moisture at all. Silk is delicate enough that we go slow and conservative with it. Shag needs extra grooming at the end so the long strands don't dry matted. Hand-knotted Persian and other oriental pieces get their own page, oriental rug cleaning, because a wool foundation and natural dyes change the plan.
How the cleaning goes
A mild pre-treatment gets worked into the pile first to loosen ground-in dirt, pet hair, and the body oil that builds up wherever people prop their feet. Then the actual clean, done with low moisture so the rug ends up damp and never soaked. Nothing seeps through to the hardwood or tile underneath.
That matters more than it sounds. A flooded rug can take days to dry in a Chapin July, and slow drying is where mildew, shrinkage, and color bleeding start. Keep the water low and most of those problems never get a chance.
Spots and odors get their own attention. A food spill usually lets go during the pre-treatment. A pet accident that soaked into the backing needs an enzyme that breaks down the urine itself, and if an old one has already changed the dye, you'll hear that before we start. The mark may fade without disappearing. The smell is a different story; that we can usually beat.
When it's clean, the tech grooms the pile in one direction so it dries evenly and the nap looks right. Give it the afternoon and it's dry enough to walk on. Then the two of you walk around it, and any spot that needs another pass gets one on the spot.
Why it's worth paying someone
Rugs take more abuse per square foot than wall-to-wall carpet. They sit at the door or under the kitchen table, they catch everything that falls, and the grit that works down to the base of the pile saws at the fibers every time someone steps on it. Getting that grit out is how a decent rug makes it twenty years. Leave it in and you might get eight.
Then there's the stuff you can't see. Pollen season here turns every porch yellow, and a rug by the back door collects its share, along with dander and plain house dust. For anybody with allergies, a clean rug makes a noticeable difference in a week.
Once a year covers most homes. A rug in a house with pets or toddlers, or the runner in a busy hall, can use it twice.
Fringe is usually the first thing to give a rug away. It yellows, it tangles in the vacuum, and it's the part people notice when they walk in. Cotton fringe brightens up a good deal with cleaning, though fringe that has been chewed or pulled loose by a beater bar is a repair, and we'll leave it as it is and tell you so.
Before we get there, and after we leave
You don't have to do much. Take small tables, plants, and anything breakable off the rug, and pick up the dog toys. If the rug sits on wall-to-wall carpet, ask us about cleaning the carpet under it on the same visit, since that's often the dirtiest square of carpet in the house and nobody has seen it in years.
Once we're done, keep heavy furniture off until the pile is dry, and put a square of foil or plastic under any wooden legs that go back down sooner. A good rug pad underneath helps more than people expect. It keeps the rug from creeping, cushions the fibers, and lets air move under the rug in a humid house.
Who's doing the work
Our technicians are trained in low-moisture rug and carpet cleaning, and we carry insurance. The products are biodegradable and safe around kids and pets. You get a price before we begin and it stays the price. And the guarantee is simple: a rug that disappoints you gets cleaned again, and if it still falls short, you owe nothing.
Plenty of folks pair a rug with the sofa it sits in front of. Our upholstery cleaning uses the same gentle approach. Rug and furniture discounts are both listed with our current coupons, and you can reach us at 803-310-3848 any time or schedule online.
